Most people are far too familiar with the phenomenon in which songs weasel their way into one’s mind then settle in indefinitely separate research from the United States and England shows that 98 to 99 per cent of people have, at least once, had a song stuck in their head and been powerless to shake it off.

Some people get excited about their birthday. Others get hyped up at Christmas. But for me, the most thrilling night of the year is the Eurovision Song Contest, where cheesy songs and queasy frocks are lapped up by 100 million fans around the world.
